Digitally reuniting a scattered collection.
HMS Challenger conducted a four-year expedition around the world’s oceans between 1872-1876 that laid the foundations of modern oceanography.

But the specimens collected on the voyage were eventually distributed across more than twenty different museums and institutions.
Reuniting data about the collections from the different museums helps researchers understand Challenger’s voyage and discoveries. As part pf a project led by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, we built a site for the reunited data.
Our search, deep zoom and faceting helps users discover over 13,000 different samples and specimens from this unique voyage. These brittle stars were collected 150 years ago off the coast of Chile and are now held by Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum.
